INTERNET
The Internet is a network of networks, linking computer to computers, each runs software to provide or "serve" information and or to access and view information.
The Internet is the transport vehicle for the information stored in files or documents on another computer. It is sometimes compared to a giant international plumbing system. The Internet itself does not contain information. It is a slight mis-statement to say a "document was found on the Internet. "It would be more correct to say it was found through or using the Internet. What it was found on, is one of the computers linked to the Internet. There is no central administering of the Internet. No individual can lay down the laws for the entire community. The Internet has been described as a cooperative anarchy where each individual network has its own rules and its own organization chart. But communication between networks can't happen without co-operations, and so there are committees and working groups, hard at work all the time to make the network functional.
Computers on the Internet may use one or all of the following Internet services:
Electronic mail (e-mail): Permits you to send and receive mail.
Telnet or remote login: Permits your computer to log into another computer and use it as if you were there.
File Transfer Protocol or FTP: is the name of a specific set of protocols used by computers connected over the internet to transfer files.
The World Wide Web (WWW or "the Web"): The largest, fastest growing activity on the Internet. When your log onto the Internet using a browser, you are viewing documents on the World Wide Web. The WWW functions using Hypertext, highlighted links to other documents on the Web.
Interactive Communication: An email can traverse the circumference of the globe and arrive at its destination in a matter of seconds. But there are times when you need to communicate interactively, in real time, just as you would over a telephone. There are applications of the internet which provide for interactive communication.
