WHAT IS WINDOWS?
Think of Windows as a football coach who makes sure all the parts of your computer-your hardware and programs-work together as a team. There are many different operating systems-but Windows is very easy to use.
Windows is an operating system. An operating system is a software that controls and runs your computer.
COMMON TERMS
Desktop: The large, background area of the Windows screen. You can customize the desktop by adding shortcuts to your favorite programs, documents printers. You can also change the look of the desktop to fit your mood and personality.
Icons: There are the small graphical symbols that represent applications such as word processing or Internet Explorer in Windows. Icons are the minimized form of windows represented by graphical pictures.
Control Menu Box: It is on the upper left corner of each window which is used to move, size, restore and close a window.
Title Bar: It is a horizontal strip residing at the top of the window. It displays the title associated with the window. When the widow is active the title bar is usually highlighted.
The three buttons present in the title bar on the right hand side are used for controlling the size of the window.
Minimize Button: Clicking on this button will reduce the size of the running window to an icon and this icon will now reside on the taskbar.
Maximize Button: Maximize button is used for making the size of the window big, filling up the entire screen.
Close Button: If you want to close the window then bring the mouse pointer over this button and click once, the active window will be closed.
Menu Bar: It is a list of options, these can be selected as per the requirement.
Scroll Bars: They are used to see the entire list or contents of a document available withing a widow by scrolling horizontally and vertically.
Mouse Pointer: It is an arrow used for pointing items. It is controlled by the movement of the mouse.
Task Bar: It is positioned at the bottom of the screen and displays buttons for each open window on your screen.
Start Button: This button is framed at the left corner of the Task bar. It is used to provide quick access to programs, files and help with window.
If This Happens... Do This:
You see a dialog box, asking you the user name and password.
Move the mouse over the Cancel button and press the left mouse button. Windows will start without creating a user account for you on the computer.
You see the Welcome to Windows dialog box.
Move the mouse over the Close button, and press the left mouse button.
You don't have to do anything - you can start using Windows!
You see an unfriendly - looking blue screen with the title "Microsoft ScanDisk".
Oops! Someone turned the computer off without shutting down Windows, wait while the ScanDisk program checks your hard disk for any error an improper shutdown. Windows starts ScanDisk has finished checking the hard drive.
What is a file?
A computer file is a unit of information. It is necessary that each file when stored in a computer to be given a name. You must give different names to different files.
What is a folder?
A folder contains collection of files. Hence, a folder contains many files and you can easily find and work with the related files. Sometimes folders are also referred to as sub-directories.
